The Representative of Massachusetts Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation met with the Guangdong Youth League

In August 2014, the U.S. governor of Massachusetts and the Director of the Massachusetts Department of Foreign Trade, Richard Elam, led a delegation to Guangdong, China to mark the 230th anniversary of the first trip of “Empress of China” in Guangzhou. Richard Elam said that the delegation had a brief time in Guangzhou, but felt deeply about the reach traditional culture and economic development of Guangzhou. He hopes that Massachusetts, Boston, and Guangzhou will complement each other and establish good mutually beneficial cooperation.

During the visit to China, Boston and the People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality signed a memorandum on strengthening cooperation and exchanges. According to the memorandum, the two cities will strengthen their exchanges and cooperation in areas such as the economy, trade, culture, education, science and technology, healthcare, tourism and medical science. They will conduct exchanges through mutual visits and establish long-term friendly relations. Boston Mayor’s Special Envoy and Director of Boston’s Economic Development Agency, John Barlow, delivered a handwritten letter from the Mayor of Boston to the Mayor of Guangzhou, Jianhua Chen. A famous architect, Thomas Paine, gave the “Guangzhou Day” Plaque to Guangzhou. The Mayor of Guangzhou, Jianghua Chen, said that Guangzhou would ask local artists to design the “Empress of China” statue to commemorate the profound influence of the first trip brings to Guangzhou and Massachusetts.

Through the planning and coordination of UCIC, the delegation, the vice chairman of Guangdong Youth Federation – Zhihua Zhang, and the entrepreneurs of Guangdong Youth Federation had a nice talk and exchanged gifts.
